Kate Bennett Horsemanship
Lesson & Training Program
Lesson & Training Program
These are not your typical ‘riding lessons,’ that’s why we don’t call them ‘riding lessons’! Here at Kate Bennett Horsemanship, you will learn to ride (either your horse or one at Solid Ground in Scarborough, Maine), groom, tack-up, ground work, liberty work, and more! The focus is put on building the horse-human relationship. Here, you will be learning to communicate effectively but respectively with the horses by asking them questions rather than demanding and learning how to interpret the horses’ questions to us and how to properly answer them. This will allow us to better understand our horses and create a partnership. Through this, we will be able to understand when our horses need a break, when they feel good, when something is wrong, when they are happy, when they are confused, and more!
Open to all ages and skill levels all months of the year. Whether you are just starting to learn about horses or you have been a horse lover your whole life, Kate creates an individualized plan for each person tailored to their skill level, goals, and age.
Each lesson is 1 hour long. This includes a 1 hour private lesson focused on different topics but tailored to the individual, their goals, and skill level. Kate believes being a well rounded rider, trainer, and having a well rounded horse is a good thing! This means working with a variety of disciplines and having her students and horses experience a variety of disciplines. This helps to keep everyone engaged, looking forward to something new, and it prevents us from drilling our horses too much with one specific discipline. Think of it as cross-training for horses. It also allows them and us to build up muscles in a variety of ways, keep things interesting, prevents shut-down horses, and much more!
Are you not interested in riding but love horses and want to learn more about them? We don’t call our lessons ‘riding lessons’ for a reason! We understand that some people don’t want to ride, have physical restrictions and can’t ride, need to regain their confidence before riding, and more. If you can’t or choose not to ride, your lesson will cover more ground work, liberty work, and other ways to still work with and exercise (either physically or mentally) the horse while building the horse-human relationship so you can still spend time and learn with these amazing animals.
This program doubles as our training program since building the relationship between horse and human is a huge part of training. Kate teaches the horses owner along with the horse so they can work as well together as possible.

There is no need to own a horse to participate in this program (though if you do, that’s great too)! These lessons can be held with the horses at Solid Ground in Scarborough, Maine or with your own horse. Kate travels to people with their own horses and she also welcomes people to travel to Solid Ground with their horses for a lesson. Below is some more information regarding Kate traveling to you, and bringing a horse to Solid Ground for a lesson.
Travel Fee: Depends on distance/travel time and is based off of 30 minute intervals. First 30 minutes: Travel up to 30 minutes away from Solid Ground is free of charge! Distances up to 1 hour: $20 travel fee. First 30 minutes are free of charge! Kate currently does not travel over 1 hour away from Solid Ground for lessons/trainings. Are your further than 1 hour away but want to work with Kate? Contact her today to discuss clinic and workshop opportunities.
* Please note: horses can carry up to 20% of their body weight comfortably without creating health issues related to the rider’s weight. We can have riders up to 200 pounds. Please only sign up for our riding programs using our horses if you are 200 pounds or less. Anyone who is over 200 pounds is encouraged to sign up for our horsemanship program and on the ground workshops and clinics where you can learn and still work with the horses on the ground without riding.
Please note, as of 5/1/2019 our program out of Solid Ground working with our horses is currently full. Kate does currently have availability to travel to teach those with their own horses and for those with their own horses to trailer in to Solid Ground (providing there is proof of negative Coggins within 1 yr & vaccine records). We do have a wait list for those interested in lessons with our horses at Solid Ground, please contact Kate Bennett (contact info below) if you would like to be added to the wait list.
